The iPhone 14 Plus is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, announced on September 7, 2022, and released on October 7, 2022 — three weeks after the iPhone 14 it enlarges. It revived the "Plus" name after five years and inverted the mini experiment it replaced: where the iPhone 13 mini had offered the full flagship small, the 14 Plus offered the big screen cheap — the 6.7-inch panel and huge battery that had been gated behind the $1,099 Pro Max, now at $899 with the base model's internals.

The pitch was precise: the Pro Max's two most-wanted attributes (screen and battery, consistently the top big-phone purchase drivers in Apple's own research) without the Pro price. What it inherited from the iPhone 14 came wholesale — the A15 carry-over, the Photonic Engine dual camera, autofocus front camera, Crash Detection, satellite SOS, and eSIM-only US models.

Early sales ran famously soft — supply-chain reports had production cut within weeks, and the Plus became the cycle's designated "flop" story — before the model found its price-cut groove in later lineups. Apple kept the format three more generations regardless: an audience for cheap-and-big existed, just smaller and later-buying than the launch window measures.

The 14 generation's flat aluminum design at 6.7 inches: 160.8 × 78.1 × 7.8 mm and 203 g — dramatically lighter than the 240 g iPhone 14 Pro Max whose footprint it shares, the aluminum-versus-steel difference made tactile. The same repair-friendly removable back glass as the 14, the same six-color palette with Yellow joining in March 2023, Ceramic Shield, IP68, MagSafe.

The 4,325 mAh cell driving a 60 Hz panel with the efficient A15 produced what Apple called the best battery life ever in an iPhone at launch — edging even the iPhone 14 Pro Max, whose ProMotion and Always-On display drew more. Independent testing agreed within minutes either way; for endurance-first buyers the $899 Plus was the rational extreme of the whole lineup.

Identical to the iPhone 14: the larger-sensor f/1.5 stabilized main, ultra-wide, Photonic Engine processing, autofocus selfie camera, and Action mode. No telephoto, no 48 MP, no LiDAR — the Pro camera gap was the $100-to-$200 question the Plus posed and each buyer answered.

Reviews liked the object and puzzled at its position: the big screen and class-leading battery earned praise, while the $899 slot — $100 over the identical-but-smaller 14, $100 under the vastly better-equipped 14 Pro — struck most as awkward, and the three-week launch delay quietly separated it from the generation's news cycle. Sales data validated the skeptics early (production cuts by November) and the concept late: at $799 and then $699 in subsequent lineups, the Plus tier sold steadily to its actual audience — older buyers, media watchers, battery maximalists.

It was discontinued with the 14 on September 9, 2024.

The 14 Plus settled the shape of the modern four-phone lineup: two sizes of base, two sizes of Pro — the grid the line kept through the iPhone 16 Plus and reshaped only when the iPhone Air replaced the Plus slot in the 17 generation. Its launch stumble refined how Apple positions the second base model (price gaps narrowed thereafter), and its battery crown demonstrated that the cheapest route to iPhone endurance was never the Pro Max — a fact its fans regarded as the lineup's best-kept secret.
