The iPhone 16 Pro Max is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, announced on September 9, 2024, and released on September 20, 2024 — the largest iPhone made to that point, its display grown to 6.9 inches inside bezels thin enough to keep the body within a millimeter of the iPhone 15 Pro Max's. With camera parity restored across the Pro tier, its exclusives reverted to scale: the biggest screen and the longest battery life yet measured on an iPhone, with the A18 Pro's thermal headroom best exploited by the big chassis.
Everything else was the iPhone 16 Pro's feature set — the all-48 MP wide/ultra-wide pair, 5× tetraprism telephoto, 4K 120 Dolby Vision, studio mics, Camera Control, Apple Intelligence readiness — at the familiar $1,199, 256 GB floor. It held the demand-center role its predecessors established, and passed the crown to the iPhone 17 Pro Max in September 2025.

Otherwise identical to the 16 Pro — the size premium bought display, battery, and thermals only.

The parity meant its camera reviews were the 16 Pro's — the year's best — plus the note that big hands got the best window on them.

The 16 Pro Max pushed the Max format to its dimensional practical limit — 6.9 inches in a hand-holdable body — and closed the titanium Pro era holding every superlative: biggest, brightest, longest-lasting, best camera. Its successor iPhone 17 Pro Max kept the size and swapped the material story for a thermal one, inheriting the demand-center role this line has now made permanent.
