The iPhone 16 is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, announced on September 9, 2024, and released on September 20, 2024, with the iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Its slogan — "Built for Apple Intelligence" — stated the strategy: the entire generation shipped with the RAM and Neural Engine budget for Apple's on-device AI system, ending the year-old chip hand-me-down policy at a stroke. The base 16 received the new A18, 8 GB of RAM, and with them full Apple Intelligence eligibility on day one (the software itself trickled out across iOS 18's point releases).
Two new buttons rebuilt the phone's controls: the iPhone 15 Pro's Action Button came down-tier, and Camera Control — a capacitive-and-mechanical two-stage key on the right edge — offered half-press focus, slide zoom, and instant launch anywhere. The cameras rearranged vertically (enabling spatial capture), the main 48 MP "Fusion" camera gained faster readout, and MagSafe wired charging rose to 25 W.
As of 2026 the iPhone 16 remains on sale as Apple's discounted prior-generation tier, alongside the iPhone 17 family.
1 Design✎
The flat aluminum design with color-infused glass turned saturated again — Ultramarine and Teal led a palette that answered two pale generations — with the vertical camera pill recalling the iPhone 12. 170 g, Dynamic Island, Ceramic Shield, IP68, MagSafe. Camera Control sits flush in the lower right edge, sapphire-capped, working through cases via a passthrough Apple specified for accessory makers.

The A18's second-generation 3-nanometer process and 8 GB of RAM existed for one strategic reason — Apple Intelligence could not ship on a lesser floor — and threw in a 30% CPU and 40% GPU gain with hardware ray tracing at the base tier. Wi-Fi 7, Thread, and 25 W MagSafe rounded out the internals; satellite Messages joined SOS.
3 Camera✎
The 48 MP Fusion main camera (faster sensor readout, zero shutter lag in more modes) and a macro-capable f/2.2 ultra-wide arranged vertically restored spatial photo and video capture to the base tier. Camera Control made the hardware pitch: half-press to lock focus and exposure, slide for zoom, click to shoot — a physical camera grammar reviewers mostly liked and casual users mostly ignored. Photographic Styles became live-editable with skin-tone-aware tone mapping.
4 Software✎
Shipped with iOS 18; Apple Intelligence features rolled out from iOS 18.1 (writing tools, notification summaries) through 18.2+ (Genmoji, ChatGPT integration, Visual Intelligence via Camera Control). Current release train since.
5 Release and reception✎
Reviews called the 16 the best-value base iPhone in years — Pro-class chip, both new buttons, vivid colors — with the 60 Hz display now the tier's lone conspicuous economy. Launch demand ran steadier than the AI marketing implied (Apple Intelligence arrived piecemeal, and its reviews were themselves mixed), but the generation sold strongly through the cycle, and the 16 moved to the $699 prior-gen slot at the iPhone 17 launch, where it remains on sale.
6 Legacy✎
The 16 ended the base tier's silicon lag on AI's account — the "built for Apple Intelligence" floor (8 GB, current-gen Neural Engine) became the lineup's new constant, inherited by the iPhone 16e, iPhone 17, and iPhone 17e. Camera Control opened a second hardware control surface the 17 generation kept, and the 16's saturated palette marked the base tier's turn back to color as identity.
