The iPhone 11 Pro Max is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, announced on September 10, 2019, and released on September 20, 2019 — the large model of the first "Pro" iPhone generation, alongside the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11. It succeeded the iPhone XS Max with the same 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR class display and stainless build, the generation's triple camera and A13 Bionic, and the year's single most dramatic spec: battery life five hours beyond its predecessor — the largest one-generation endurance jump in the line's history, and the phone that made "all-day battery" literal for heavy users.
Reviews crowned it the best phone of 2019 outright, with the asterisk that its 226-gram mass and $1,099 floor made it a deliberate choice. Like its smaller twin it served one year, discontinued at the iPhone 12 Pro Max's debut.
1 Design✎
The Pro Max scales the generation's frosted matte-glass back and triangular triple-lens plateau to the 6.5-inch frame at 226 g — 18 heavier than the XS Max, nearly all of it battery. Midnight Green, Space Gray, Silver, and Gold; four-meter IP68; the polished steel band unchanged. It was the last Max with the rounded-sided design language, the 12 generation moving to flat edges the following year.

The five-hour battery gain came from everywhere at once: a 25% larger 3,969 mAh cell filling the space the thinner display driver and rearranged logic board freed, the XDR panel's 15% power saving, and the A13's efficiency cores drawing a third the power of the A12's. Endurance tests routinely cleared a day and a half; the 18 W USB-C charger in the box replaced the long-mocked 5-watt brick.
3 Camera✎
Identical to the iPhone 11 Pro — the 0.5×/1×/2× triple array, Night mode, Deep Fusion, four 12-megapixel cameras, extended-dynamic-range 4K — and on the Max's 6.5-inch XDR panel the results simply had a better viewfinder. The camera parity between Pro sizes, begun in the XS year, was now policy: the Max premium bought screen and battery, nothing hidden.
4 Software✎
iOS 13 at launch, Deep Fusion via 13.2, and the current iOS release train ever since — the 2019 Pro generation still updating seven years on.
5 Release and reception✎
The Pro Max repeated the Max-tier pattern of outselling its smaller sibling, and reviews were the year's most emphatic: best display, best camera, and a battery result reviewers called the real headline of the generation. The weight and price were the only sustained complaints. It was discontinued on October 13, 2020, one year in.
6 Legacy✎
The 11 Pro Max set the modern expectation that the biggest iPhone is also the longest-lasting — the battery crown the Max/Pro Max tier has defended in every generation since, through the current iPhone 17 Pro Max. With its siblings it closed the rounded-design era at its peak: the best-reviewed, best-selling send-off the 2014 design language could have asked for.
