The iPhone 14 Pro Max is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, announced on September 7, 2022, and released on September 16, 2022 — the large model of the generation that introduced the Dynamic Island, the 48-megapixel main camera, the Always-On ProMotion display, and the Pro-exclusive A16 Bionic. As with the 13 Pro Max before it, camera and feature parity with the smaller iPhone 14 Pro left size as its territory: the 6.7-inch, 2,000-nit panel — the largest, brightest display on any iPhone — and the generation's longest battery life.
It was the phone the 2022 holiday season could not buy: demand concentrated on the Pro Max just as COVID lockdowns halted the Zhengzhou "iPhone City" plant that built most of them, producing December delivery dates, Apple's rare revenue warning, and the clearest demonstration yet that the most expensive iPhone had become the most wanted one. Discontinued after a year, succeeded by the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
1 Design✎
The Pro architecture at 160.7 × 77.6 × 7.85 mm and 240 g — the heaviest iPhone made — in Space Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple. The Dynamic Island replaced the notch; the camera plateau grew around the 48 MP optics; Ceramic Shield, IP68 at six meters, MagSafe, and US eSIM-only all carried the generation's spec.
2 Display✎
The 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR — 2796 × 1290 at 460 ppi — with the full 14 Pro display suite at maximum size: ProMotion from 1 to 120 Hz, the Always-On lock screen, 1,600 nits HDR and 2,000 nits outdoors, and the Island. It measured as the brightest, and by most testing the best, display fitted to a phone at its release.

The 4,323 mAh cell with the A16's efficiency held the generation's endurance lead among the Pros, though the 60 Hz iPhone 14 Plus nipped it in some tests — Always-On and ProMotion have a price. Everything else matched the 14 Pro: the silicon split, the LPDDR5 memory, the ProRes-ready 1 TB ceiling.
4 Camera✎
Identical to the iPhone 14 Pro: the 48-megapixel quad-pixel main with its 2× crop tier, 3× telephoto, macro ultra-wide, LiDAR, Photonic Engine, ProRAW at full resolution, and 4K Cinematic and Action modes. On the biggest, brightest viewfinder in the line, with the most battery behind long ProRes sessions — the working-camera argument for the Max remained practical rather than optical.
5 Software✎
iOS 16 at launch; Live Activities opened the Island to apps in 16.1; satellite SOS live from November. Current release train since.
6 Release and reception✎
The Pro Max led every preference metric of the cycle — surveyed intent, carrier mix, resale premiums — and then led its shortage: the Zhengzhou lockdown cut its supply at peak demand, stretched deliveries past Christmas, and forced Apple's November investor warning, the clearest single demonstration of how much of the product's revenue now rode its most expensive configuration. Reviews were the generation's strongest — display, camera, battery, Island — with weight and the unchanged base storage as refrains. Discontinued September 12, 2023.
7 Legacy✎
The 14 Pro Max marks the Max tier's full ascension: not merely the biggest option but the demand center of the entire product line, a position it has held in every generation since — through the current iPhone 17 Pro Max. Its shortage quarter reshaped Apple's supply chain (accelerating India assembly and supplier diversification), and its display/camera/battery triad remains the definition of "the best iPhone" in the public shorthand.
