The iPhone 17 is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, forming part of the nineteenth generation of the iPhone. It was announced alongside the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max during an Apple Event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California on September 9, 2025, and released on September 19 after pre-orders began on September 12.

Positioned as Apple's most affordable flagship iPhone for 2025, the iPhone 17 starts at $799 and is available in five colors: Lavender, Sage, Mist Blue, White, and Black. Compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 retains a similar overall design while delivering upgraded internals, a larger display with ProMotion, an improved camera system, and enhanced durability through Ceramic Shield 2.

A new model in the standard iPhone lineup is not expected until early 2027, as Apple has shifted its entry-level iPhone release cycle. In 2026, Apple released the iPhone 17e as a more affordable option but will not release an iPhone 18 standard model that year; only the iPhone 18 Pro models and iPhone Fold are expected.

2 Design

The iPhone 17 uses an aluminum unibody frame with contoured edges and thinner bezels than the iPhone 16. The front is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple states is tougher than any smartphone glass or glass-ceramic with three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The display itself is a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel — larger than the 6.1-inch display on the iPhone 16 — with a resolution of 2622 × 1206 pixels at 460 pixels per inch.

For the first time on a non-Pro iPhone, the display features ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, enabling smoother scrolling, more responsive gaming, and improved power efficiency. It also supports Always-On functionality, capable of reaching a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and dimming to 1 nit. Apple claims 33% fewer reflections compared to the previous generation.

The iPhone 17 includes a Camera Control button for instant camera access and an Action button that users can customize to launch their preferred feature.

OS iOS 19

The iPhone 17 is powered by the Apple A19 chip, built on a 3-nanometer process. The A19 supports Apple Intelligence, Apple's on-device AI system. The device includes 8 GB of RAM, sufficient for Apple Intelligence features and general multitasking.

All iPhone 17 models and the iPhone Air include Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE), an always-on hardware-and-OS memory-safety defense. MIE uses Apple's secure memory allocators and Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension in synchronous mode, hardening the kernel and over 70 userland processes. Apple states the system is designed to make mercenary spyware exploit chains significantly more expensive to develop.

The iPhone 17 drops the 128 GB storage option that was available on the iPhone 16, making it the first base-model iPhone to start at 256 GB. A 512 GB option is also available.

4 Camera

The iPhone 17 features a 48 MP Dual Fusion camera system on the rear, a significant upgrade from the iPhone 16. The main camera is a 48 MP Fusion lens that supports optical-quality 2× zoom through sensor cropping, producing 12 MP telephoto-equivalent shots. The ultra-wide camera is also 48 MP, enabling more detailed expansive shots and macro photography.

The front camera is an 18 MP Center Stage sensor with Dual Capture, a new design using a square sensor that allows the camera to intelligently frame shots in either landscape or portrait orientation regardless of how the phone is held. This is particularly useful for group selfies and video calls, as the camera adapts framing in real time.

5 Connectivity

The iPhone 17 uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 modem for 5G connectivity, supporting both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands. Unlike the iPhone Air, which debuted Apple's own C1X modem, the iPhone 17 opted for the established Qualcomm solution.

For Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread, the iPhone 17 uses Apple's new N1 networking chip — part of the company's broader effort to reduce reliance on third-party chip suppliers like Broadcom. The N1 supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0.

The iPhone 17 also supports satellite connectivity for Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My, available free for two years from activation.

6 Battery and charging

Apple states the iPhone 17 delivers 30 hours of video playback — eight hours more than the iPhone 16. The battery capacity is 3,692 mAh, a modest increase from the iPhone 16's 3,561 mAh, with the improved efficiency coming primarily from the A19 chip and ProMotion display.

Using Apple's new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (sold separately for $39), the iPhone 17 can reach 50% charge in 20 minutes. Ten minutes of charging provides approximately eight hours of video playback. The device supports MagSafe wireless charging at up to 25W with Qi2-certified chargers.

7 iPhone 17 lineup

The iPhone 17 was released as part of a four-model lineup:

Model Display Chip Starting price
iPhone 17 6.3" A19 $799
iPhone Air 6.6" A19 $1,199
iPhone 17 Pro 6.3" A19 Pro $1,099
iPhone 17 Pro Max 6.9" A19 Pro $1,199

The iPhone Air, introduced as a new product category, is Apple's thinnest iPhone at 5.64 mm. The Pro models feature 12 GB of RAM, a triple-camera system with up to 8× optical zoom, an A19 Pro chip, and an aluminum alloy and glass construction with a vapor chamber for thermal management.

In March 2026, Apple introduced the iPhone 17e, an affordable model starting at $599 with 256 GB storage, the A19 chip, and a single 48 MP camera.
