The iPhone 15 Pro is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, announced on September 12, 2023, and released on September 22, 2023, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the base 15 models. Its material was the message: a grade-5 titanium frame replaced stainless steel, cutting 19 grams — the difference reviewers kept handing to skeptics to feel — while the A17 Pro became the first 3-nanometer chip in any phone, with hardware ray tracing that Apple demonstrated by porting console games (Resident Evil Village, Death Stranding) natively to iOS.

The mute switch — present since 2007 — became the Action Button, a configurable press for camera, flashlight, Shortcuts, or silence; USB-C arrived with USB 3 speeds at the Pro tier, recording ProRes directly to external drives; and spatial video capture for the Vision Pro headset landed by update. Camera parity with the Max broke again — the 5× tetraprism telephoto stayed Max-exclusive, leaving the Pro at 3×.

It was discontinued at the iPhone 16 Pro's launch a year later.

Brushed grade-5 titanium over a new aluminum substructure — 187 g against the 14 Pro's 206, with slimmer bezels shrinking the body around the same 6.1-inch panel — in Natural, Blue, White, and Black Titanium. The back glass became single-piece removable, halving major repair pricing. Contoured edges softened the flat design's bite; Ceramic Shield, IP68, MagSafe/Qi2 carried over. Early units' titanium showed fingerprint discoloration that wiped away — the launch week's tempest — and a bend-test scare about the new frame failed to replicate into a story.

The A17 Pro's 3-nanometer process, six-core ray-tracing GPU, and 8 GB of RAM aimed the Pro tier explicitly at gaming and pro capture; the AAA console ports that followed were more proof-of-concept than catalog, but the silicon claim stood unmatched. Wi-Fi 6E and Thread radios quietly future-proofed the spec sheet. The 8 GB of RAM turned out decisive a year on: it made the 15 Pro generation the oldest hardware able to run Apple Intelligence.

The 48-megapixel main gained a coating-and-software fix for the lens-flare ghosting long complained about, default 24 MP output, and framing choices (24/28/35 mm) treated as lenses. ProRes at 4K 60 recorded straight to external USB-C storage — the feature that put iPhones on real film sets (Apple shot its October 2023 Mac event on 15 Pro Maxes) — and spatial video arrived for the Vision Pro's launch. The 3× telephoto's gap against the Max's new 5× was the tier's internal storyline.

Reviews framed the titanium, Action Button, and USB 3 as quality-of-life wins and the A17 Pro as headroom banked for later — accurate on both counts, as the Apple Intelligence cutoff a year later proved. Weight was the change users actually noticed daily; the 5× Max exclusive the recurring gripe. Strong Pro-skewed sales continued the tier's dominance. Discontinued September 9, 2024 — and uniquely *not* retained at a discount, its slot filled by the incoming 16 Pro.

The 15 Pro began the titanium era and ended the mute switch's 16-year run — the Action Button and (via the base 16) its sibling Camera Control rebuilt the iPhone's physical controls for the first time since 2007. Its USB-C-with-USB-3 pro-capture story put the iPhone into production workflows for good, and its 8 GB RAM floor accidentally defined the Apple Intelligence era's hardware line. The current iPhone 17 Pro still runs on the grammar this phone wrote.
