The iPhone 14 Pro is a smartphone designed and marketed by Apple, announced on September 7, 2022, and released on September 16, 2022, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the base 14 models. It retired the iPhone X's five-year-old notch for the Dynamic Island — a pill-shaped sensor cutout that iOS animates into a live, morphing status surface for calls, timers, music, and activities — the rare hardware compromise redesigned into a feature, and the launch's dominant story.

The rest of the update was the Pro tier's densest in years: a 48-megapixel main camera — the first resolution increase since 2015, quad-binning to 12-megapixel shots and unlocking a 2× crop-zoom tier — the A16 Bionic on a 4-nanometer process (now exclusive to the Pros under the generation's chip split), an Always-On display idling ProMotion down to 1 Hz with 2,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness, plus Crash Detection and satellite SOS with the rest of the generation.

Reviews called it the year's real new iPhone, and the sales mix agreed to a fault — demand skewed so Pro-ward that the base models ran discounted while Pro production strained. One year, then the iPhone 15 Pro.

The stainless-and-matte-glass Pro build carried over at 206 g, the camera plateau growing again around the 48 MP optics. Space Black (deeper than Graphite), Silver, Gold, and the launch-signature Deep Purple; Ceramic Shield; IP68 at six meters; MagSafe. The Dynamic Island replaced the notch with a floating pill the display treats as an object — smaller in area than the notch, dramatically larger in software presence.

The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR panel took three leaps: ProMotion's floor dropped to 1 Hz enabling the first iPhone Always-On display (dimming the whole lock screen — wallpaper, widgets, and all — a maximalist take that iOS 16.2 later offered to simplify); HDR peak reached 1,600 nits and outdoor peak 2,000, the brightest phone display shipped; and the Island's cutout made the top of the screen interactive canvas.

The A16 — first 4-nanometer phone chip, with LPDDR5 memory and a display engine built for the 1 Hz Always-On — was now a Pro exclusive, the generation's defining segmentation. Its gains were efficiency-shaped; the base 14's A15 remained faster than the Android field, which was the split's actuarial logic.

The 48-megapixel quad-pixel main sensor — 65% larger than the 13 Pro's — normally binned four pixels into one for superb 12 MP shots, opened full 48 MP in ProRAW for photographers, and cropped its center for a genuinely optical-quality 2× — restoring the classic portrait length the 3× telephoto had abandoned and quietly becoming the mode users lived in. The Photonic Engine pipeline lifted every lens; 4K Cinematic mode and Action mode covered video. Reviews scored it the year's best camera system, with the 48 MP ProRAW files drawing working-photographer attention the line had never quite held before.

The Dynamic Island earned the rare unanimous verdict: delightful, and instantly the most copied idea in the industry (Android "islands" appeared within months). Demand concentrated on the Pros hard enough that the November COVID lockdown of the Zhengzhou plant — "iPhone City" — produced the cycle's defining shortage, Apple's rare mid-quarter guidance warning, and multi-week Pro delivery times through the holidays. Reviews' only recurring dings: base storage still 128 GB, and Always-On's aggressive first draft. Discontinued September 12, 2023.

The Dynamic Island became the whole lineup's face (base models adopted it the following year) and the design language's answer to the notch it retired; 48 megapixels reset the iPhone camera's resolution path after seven years of 12; and the A16's Pro exclusivity hardened the two-tier silicon strategy the line still runs. The 14 Pro is the modern Pro template — every generation since, through the current iPhone 17 Pro, is its direct refinement.
