The Apple Gift Card ended a decade of gift-card confusion: one card, one Apple Account balance, spendable on anything from an app to a Mac. Its 2020 debut merged the iTunes card — corner-store staple of the download era — with the hardware-only Apple Store card into a single "everything Apple" product.

The card's ubiquity has a dark twin: "pay me in Apple gift cards" became a signature of phone scams, prompting warnings printed on the packaging and store-clerk training worldwide. That notoriety aside, the card is the ecosystem's cash port — the way allowance, birthdays, and holiday racks flow into the App Store economy.
