Japan hosted the first Apple Store outside America: Ginza, November 2003, a glowing steel band in Tokyo's luxury district that proved the retail concept traveled. The country has been Apple retail's most devoted overseas home since — a market where the iPhone holds a majority share few countries match.

Ten stores run from Tokyo's dense cluster (Marunouchi, the country's largest; Omotesando; Shibuya; Shinjuku) through Kawasaki, Nagoya, Kyoto's paper-lantern-inspired hall, Shinsaibashi in Osaka, and Fukuoka. Launch mornings at Ginza and Omotesando — queues, chants, first-buyer ceremonies — are a fixture of Japanese tech culture, and the original Ginza store's rebuild marks the format's first full generational turnover.
