The Apple Car is the most expensive product Apple never shipped: a decade-long secret program — Project Titan — that at various points meant to build a full electric vehicle, then just autonomy software, then a car again, complete with test fleets on California roads and poached auto executives whose arrivals and exits were the only visible telemetry.

Apple cancelled the program in February 2024, moving much of the team to generative AI — a trade that reads, in hindsight, as the company choosing Apple Intelligence over asphalt. What survives is automotive-adjacent: CarPlay's deepening takeover of dashboards, and the engineering lore of the car that a trillion-dollar company decided it could not profitably build.

Titan became Silicon Valley's favorite cautionary tale about scope: ten years of pivots between "reinvent the car" and "ship something," resolved by shipping nothing. Its cancellation was received not as failure but as discipline — the rare Apple story where the product's absence is the strategy.
