The Apple U1 gave Apple devices a sense of where things are. Introduced quietly in the iPhone 11 generation, its ultra-wideband radio measures distance and direction to other U1 devices with centimeter-class precision — the technology behind AirTag's Precision Finding arrow, directional AirDrop, HomePod mini handoff, and UWB car keys.
The U1 shipped a year before it had anything to point at — classic Apple infrastructure-first silicon, waiting for AirTag. Its spatial-awareness layer became a quiet pillar of the ecosystem and was succeeded in 2023 by the second-generation UWB chip with triple the range.
