The Apple T2 quietly took over half the computer. In every late Intel Mac it ran secure boot, encrypted the SSD as its controller, processed the FaceTime camera's image, handled audio, and listened for "Hey Siri" — an Apple A10-class chip running its own bridgeOS underneath macOS, doing jobs Intel's platform was no longer trusted with.
1 Legacy✎
The T2 was the Mac transition in disguise: by 2020 so much of the Mac already ran on Apple silicon that the Apple M1 simply absorbed the T2's duties and deleted the arrangement. Its hardware-encrypted SSDs also made T2-era Macs a hard stop for third-party storage repair — a controversy that outlived the chip.
