The Apple A6 is the chip of the iPhone 5 — and the beginning of Apple's custom-CPU era. Its "Swift" cores were the first Apple designed itself against the ARM instruction set rather than licensing ARM's own, doubling the Apple A5's performance while shrinking the die.
Swift proved Apple could out-design the merchant core market, staffing and confidence that made the next year's 64-bit shock possible. Every subsequent Apple CPU core — through today's M and A-series designs — continues the lineage this chip started.
