The Apple A6 is the chip of the [[iPhone 5]] — and the beginning of Apple's custom-CPU era. Its "Swift" cores were the first Apple designed itself against the ARM instruction set rather than licensing ARM's own, doubling the [[Apple A5]]'s performance while shrinking the die.
= Legacy =
Swift proved Apple could out-design the merchant core market, staffing and confidence that made the next year's 64-bit shock possible. Every subsequent Apple CPU core — through today's M and A-series designs — continues the lineage this chip started.
