The Apple M2, announced at WWDC in June 2022, refined the M1 formula with the Apple A15 generation's Avalanche and Blizzard cores, a media engine with ProRes acceleration in the base chip for the first time, and a 24 GB memory ceiling. It debuted in the redesigned, wedge-free MacBook Air — the shape the world's best-selling laptop still holds.
The M2 Pro and M2 Max arrived in January 2023 in the MacBook Pro and, for the first time in the pro tier, the Mac mini. June 2023's M2 Ultra — 24 CPU cores, up to 76 GPU cores, 192 GB of memory — launched in both the Mac Studio and the long-awaited Mac Pro, the machine that completed the Mac's transition to Apple silicon three years after its announcement.
The M2 generation finished what the M1 started: with the Mac Pro's arrival, every Mac ran Apple's own silicon. The chip had a second act, too — a binned M2 drives the Apple Vision Pro, paired with the R1 sensor-fusion coprocessor, making it the silicon behind Apple's first spatial computer.
