The Apple M2, announced at WWDC in June 2022, refined the M1 formula with the [[Apple A15]] generation's Avalanche and Blizzard cores, a media engine with ProRes acceleration in the base chip for the first time, and a 24 GB memory ceiling. It debuted in the redesigned, wedge-free MacBook Air — the shape the world's best-selling laptop still holds.

= Variants =

The M2 Pro and M2 Max arrived in January 2023 in the MacBook Pro and, for the first time in the pro tier, the Mac mini. June 2023's M2 Ultra — 24 CPU cores, up to 76 GPU cores, 192 GB of memory — launched in both the Mac Studio and the long-awaited Mac Pro, the machine that completed the Mac's transition to [[Apple silicon]] three years after its announcement.

= Legacy =

The M2 generation finished what the M1 started: with the Mac Pro's arrival, every Mac ran Apple's own silicon. The chip had a second act, too — a binned M2 drives the Apple Vision Pro, paired with the [[Apple R1|R1]] sensor-fusion coprocessor, making it the silicon behind Apple's first spatial computer.
