The Apple R1 exists for one job the M-series cannot be trusted with: never being late. In the Apple Vision Pro it continuously fuses twelve cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, streaming fresh images to the displays within twelve milliseconds — eight times faster than the blink of an eye — so the passthrough world never lags the real one and the wearer's inner ear never disagrees with their eyes.
The R1 is Apple's first chip whose spec sheet is measured in latency, not speed — the piece of silicon that makes spatial computing physically tolerable. It carried unchanged into the M5-generation Vision Pro, its real-time guarantee outliving the main processor beside it.
