The Apple R1 exists for one job the [[Apple M2|M-series]] cannot be trusted with: never being late. In the Apple Vision Pro it continuously fuses twelve cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, streaming fresh images to the displays within twelve milliseconds — eight times faster than the blink of an eye — so the passthrough world never lags the real one and the wearer's inner ear never disagrees with their eyes.
= Legacy =
The R1 is Apple's first chip whose spec sheet is measured in latency, not speed — the piece of silicon that makes spatial computing physically tolerable. It carried unchanged into the M5-generation Vision Pro, its real-time guarantee outliving the main processor beside it.
