The Apple T1 smuggled Apple silicon into the Intel Mac four years before the M1: a small Watch-class chip running its own bridge operating system to drive the 2016 MacBook Pro's Touch Bar and, more importantly, to hold Touch ID and Apple Pay inside a Secure Enclave that Intel's processor could never touch.

The T1 established the beachhead pattern — a sealed Apple subsystem inside someone else's computer. Its expanded successor, the Apple T2, took over storage, boot, and cameras, and together they read in hindsight as the Mac transition's advance party.
