The Apple S5 kept the S4's 64-bit cores and spent its transistors elsewhere: driving the Series 5's always-on Retina display — the first Apple Watch face that never went dark — plus a built-in compass and doubled 32 GB storage. It went on to serve two more products: the first Apple Watch SE in 2020 and, in a rare S-series crossover, the HomePod mini.

The always-on display the S5 enabled became non-negotiable for every flagship Watch after it. Its HomePod mini role showed the S series had become Apple's general-purpose small-device computer, not just watch silicon.
