The city of Calpheon From the Adventurer's Guide, Pearl Abyss
| |
| Principal towns | One to each region |
|---|---|
| Largest | The city of Calpheon |
| First reached | Velia, in Balenos |
| What they provide | Storage, lodging, workshops and a market counter |
Cities in Black Desert are the settled points an adventurer works out of rather than places to look at. Each region has one principal town, and the rest of its settlements are smaller and more specialized.
A town is a set of services before it is anything else. It holds storage, provides lodging for workers, has workshops that can be bought and carries a counter for the Central Market. Those four things decide whether a place is worth basing an operation in.
Their spread across the map is what makes the economy work. Goods have to travel between them, distance is what makes trading pay, and a chain of connected nodes between two towns is what turns a remote mine into income.
Each region has one town that serves as its center and, for trade purposes, the place its goods are sold.
| Town | Region | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Velia | Balenos | A coastal fishing village, and the first town nearly every adventurer uses. |
| Heidel | Serendia | Built into a rock face, and the first place the early game stops feeling like a tutorial. |
| The city of Calpheon | Calpheon | The largest settlement in the game and the seat of the republic. |
| Altinova | Mediah | A walled trading city in a bowl of red rock, and the great market of the east. |
| Valencia City | Valencia | The desert capital, built around the royal palace. |
| Grána | Kamasylvia | The elven capital, standing in the branches of the Old Wisdom Tree. |
| Duvencrune | Drieghan | An alpine town around water that arrived after a forty-year drought. |
| O'draxxia | O'dyllita | A black-stone city behind the Thornwood Forest. |
| Eilton | Mountain of Eternal Winter | The settled point on the mountain, and its trade counter. |
| Asparkan | Ulukita | The only settlement in the region, and the way into it. |
| Hanyang | Land of the Morning Light | A version of the old Korean capital, added after the region itself. |
Most regions carry several lesser places, and they tend to exist for one purpose rather than as general bases.
Calpheon has the most: Keplan mines, Trent cuts timber, Florin grows flowers and Epheria handles the western sea traffic. Balenos has the farming town of Olvia, and Mediah has Tarif and Kusha.
Valencia has more small settlements than anywhere else, because almost nothing in the desert can support a large one. The Sand Grain Bazaar, Shakatu, Arehaza, the port at Ancado Inner Harbor and the outlaw town of Muiquun are all stops rather than centers.
