Cities in Black Desert are the settled points an adventurer works out of rather than places to look at. Each region has one principal town, and the rest of its settlements are smaller and more specialized.
A town is a set of services before it is anything else. It holds storage, provides lodging for workers, has workshops that can be bought and carries a counter for the Central Market. Those four things decide whether a place is worth basing an operation in.
Their spread across the map is what makes the economy work. Goods have to travel between them, distance is what makes trading pay, and a chain of connected nodes between two towns is what turns a remote mine into income.
The principal towns
Each region has one town that serves as its center and, for trade purposes, the place its goods are sold.

Smaller settlements
Most regions carry several lesser places, and they tend to exist for one purpose rather than as general bases.
Calpheon has the most: Keplan mines, Trent cuts timber, Florin grows flowers and Epheria handles the western sea traffic. Balenos has the farming town of Olvia, and Mediah has Tarif and Kusha.
Valencia has more small settlements than anywhere else, because almost nothing in the desert can support a large one. The Sand Grain Bazaar, Shakatu, Arehaza, the port at Ancado Inner Harbor and the outlaw town of Muiquun are all stops rather than centers.
