The Apple S9 was the S series' biggest leap since 64-bit: 5.6 billion transistors, performance cores from the Apple A16 generation running about thirty percent faster, and the Watch's first 4-core Neural Engine. That on-device ML muscle enabled the Double Tap gesture, dictation twice as accurate, and — for the first time — Siri requests processed entirely on the wrist, health data included.
The S9 put meaningful AI silicon on the wrist and its second-generation ultra-wideband chip made Precision Finding for a nearby iPhone possible. Its T8310 architecture became the platform for the years that followed — the Apple S10 and the 2025 lineup all run it.
