The Apple S8 ran the entire 2022 watch lineup — Series 8, the second SE, and the first Apple Watch Ultra — on the same S6-era dual-core, a third year for the architecture. Its new high-g accelerometer and gyroscope enabled Crash Detection across all three models, and temperature sensing arrived on the Series 8 and Ultra.
The S8's year proved the S series could stretch one design across three very different watches, from the $249 SE to the $799 Ultra. It closed the quiet stretch: the S9 that followed was the line's biggest architectural jump since 64-bit.
