The Apple S3 untethered the Watch: its optional LTE modem made September 2017's Apple Watch Series 3 the first that could call, text, and stream with the iPhone left at home. A seventy-percent faster dual-core let Siri finally speak from the wrist, the integrated W2 chip sped up Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a barometric altimeter counted flights climbed.

The Series 3 became the Watch's iPhone 3GS moment — the affordable workhorse Apple kept selling until 2022, five years on. That longevity cut both ways: the S3's 8 GB and aging cores strained under late watchOS releases, and its watchOS 8 endpoint became the argument for the S series' later performance headroom.
