The Apple A4 is Apple's first self-branded system-on-chip, introduced with the original iPad in January 2010 and carried into the iPhone 4 that June. Built on Samsung's 45 nm process around a licensed Cortex-A8 core (1 GHz in the iPad, ~800 MHz in the phone) with PowerVR graphics, it was less a radical design than a declaration: following the 2008 P.A. Semi acquisition, Apple would control its own silicon roadmap.

The A4 began the annual Apple chip cadence and the tight chip-to-product tuning that became the program's signature. Every processor Apple ships today — through the Apple A19 and the M series — descends from the organization this chip stood up.
