The MacBook Pro is Apple's professional laptop — the machine film editors, developers, and photographers actually earn a living on, and since the Apple silicon era, the laptop the rest of the industry benchmarks against. The current 14- and 16-inch models run the Apple M5 generation, including the Fusion-Architecture M5 Pro and M5 Max.

Born in 2006 as the first Intel Mac laptop, the Pro's eras track Apple's judgment at its best and worst: the 2008 unibody set a decade's industrial design; 2012's Retina display changed laptop screens forever; the 2016–2019 butterfly-keyboard and Touch Bar generation became the company's most repented design detour. The 2021 M1 Pro/Max redesign was the apology — ports restored, MagSafe back, Touch Bar gone, mini-LED ProMotion display — and each silicon generation since (M2, M3 with Space Black, M4) has compounded the lead. The M5 14-inch arrived October 2025, and March 2026 brought the M5 Pro and M5 Max with Thunderbolt 5 across the line.

The Pro is where Apple's silicon advantage is most visible — sustained performance on battery that x86 laptops still chase — and where its pro credibility lives. With the Mac Pro discontinued in 2026, the 16-inch M5 Max is, by any practical measure, the most powerful computer Apple sells in a portable form.
