Justin Drew Bieber (born March 1, 1994) is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter. He became famous as a teenager after his mother posted videos of him singing on YouTube, where talent manager Scooter Braun discovered him in 2008. With over 150 million records sold worldwide, Bieber is one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Bieber rose to international fame with his 2010 single "Baby" and has since released hits including "Sorry," "Love Yourself," "Despacito," "Stay," and "Peaches." His studio albums include My World 2.0 (2010), Believe (2012), Purpose (2015), Changes (2020), Justice (2021), and the back-to-back releases Swag and Swag II (2025). He has won two Grammy Awards and headlined Coachella in 2026.

1 Early life

Bieber was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in London, Ontario, on March 1, 1994, and grew up in Stratford, Ontario. His parents, Jeremy Jack Bieber and Pattie Mallette, were both 18 when he was born and separated soon after. He was raised mainly by his mother. He has several younger half-siblings on his father's side.

As a child, Bieber taught himself to play several instruments, including guitar, drums, piano, and trumpet. He competed in a local Stratford singing contest called Stratford Star in 2007, finishing second. His mother began posting videos of his performances on YouTube so family members who could not attend in person could watch them.

2 Career

2.1 2008–2009: Discovery and My World

In 2008, talent manager Scooter Braun came across one of Bieber's YouTube videos by accident while searching for another artist. Braun tracked down Bieber and his mother, flew them to Atlanta, and arranged a meeting with R&B singer Usher. Bieber was signed to a joint deal between Braun and Usher's RBMG Records and Island Records.

His debut single, "One Time," was released in July 2009 and reached the top 20 in several countries. His debut EP, My World, followed in November 2009. All seven of its songs entered the Billboard Hot 100, and the EP was certified platinum within a month.

2.2 2010–2012: Stardom and Believe

Bieber's first full-length studio album, My World 2.0, was released in March 2010 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, "Baby" featuring Ludacris, became one of the most-watched videos in YouTube history at the time and remains one of his signature songs. The accompanying My World Tour (2010–2011) sold 1.4 million tickets and grossed roughly $53 million.

His second studio album, Believe (2012), marked a shift toward a more mature dance-pop sound, with the singles "Boyfriend" and "As Long as You Love Me." The album debuted at number one in the United States.

2.3 2013–2014: Public incidents

During this period, Bieber faced widespread media coverage of legal and personal incidents, including a 2014 arrest in Miami Beach on charges including driving under the influence, to which he later pleaded guilty to lesser charges. He has spoken publicly in later years about the pressures of fame during his teenage years and about working through the period with therapy and faith.

2.4 2015–2017: Purpose and global comeback

In 2015, Bieber collaborated with the production duo Jack Ü on "Where Are Ü Now," which won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. The song's electronic, melancholic style set the direction for his fourth studio album, Purpose (November 2015). Purpose produced the international number-one singles "What Do You Mean?", "Sorry," and "Love Yourself," and is widely considered his commercial and critical comeback.

In 2017, Bieber appeared on the remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," which spent 16 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the most-streamed songs in history.

2.5 2018–2019: Hiatus and marriage

Bieber announced a break from music in 2017 to focus on his mental health, cancelling the remaining dates of his Purpose World Tour. In September 2018, he married model Hailey Baldwin in a New York City courthouse, with a larger ceremony following in 2019.

2.6 2020–2022: Changes, Justice, and Ramsay Hunt syndrome

Bieber returned to music with Changes (February 2020), an R&B-leaning album that explored themes of marriage and contentment. The follow-up, Justice (March 2021), produced the worldwide hits "Holy," "Peaches," and "Stay" (with The Kid LAROI). "Stay" reached number one in over 20 countries.

In June 2022, Bieber announced he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a rare condition caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The illness left part of his face temporarily paralyzed. After attempting to continue his Justice World Tour, he cancelled the remaining dates in 2023 to focus on his recovery and family.

2.7 2023–2024: Step back

Bieber largely stepped away from public performance during this period. In July 2024, he gave a rare private performance at the pre-wedding celebrations for the Indian businessman Anant Ambani in Mumbai. He and Hailey welcomed their first child, a son named Jack Blues Bieber, in August 2024.

2.8 2025–present: Swag era

Bieber released his seventh studio album, Swag, in July 2025, with billboards appearing in cities worldwide hours before the surprise release. Recorded between his Los Angeles home and Iceland, the album drew on R&B, hip hop, and acoustic textures and featured guests including Gunna, Sexyy Red, and Dijon. A companion album, Swag II, followed later that year with the singles "Love Song," "Speed Demon," and "Bad Honey."

In April 2026, Bieber headlined the Coachella Stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival across both weekends. His sets featured surprise guests including Billie Eilish, The Kid LAROI, SZA, and Wizkid, along with a "YouTube nostalgia" segment in which he performed alongside footage of his early online videos. As of mid-2026, no full world tour has been announced.

3 Personal life

Bieber has been open about his Christian faith, which he has cited as central to his recovery from the difficulties of his late teens and early twenties. He attended Hillsong Church in his early career and later became associated with Churchome and other independent congregations. He married Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin) in 2018; their son, Jack Blues Bieber, was born in 2024.

4 Artistry

Bieber's early music drew on contemporary teen pop and R&B in the tradition of artists like Justin Timberlake and his mentor Usher. From Purpose onward, his sound expanded to include electronic dance music, tropical house, and acoustic styles. The Swag albums marked a further shift toward stripped-down R&B and hip hop production. He plays guitar, piano, and drums on many of his recordings.

5 Awards and achievements

Bieber has won two Grammy Awards (Best Dance Recording for "Where Are Ü Now" in 2016 and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for "10,000 Hours" with Dan + Shay in 2021), as well as multiple American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and Billboard Music Awards. He holds Guinness World Records for streams, sales, social media followers, and music video views.
