2 Cool 4 Skool is the debut single album by South Korean boy band BTS, released on June 12, 2013 through Big Hit Entertainment and distributed by Loen Entertainment. The first entry in what would become the group's "School Trilogy," the album is rooted in a 1990s-influenced hip hop sound and centers on the frustrations of youth — particularly the pressure to conform to societal expectations and sacrifice personal dreams. It was supported by the singles "No More Dream" and "We Are Bulletproof Pt.2."
While modest in initial sales, 2 Cool 4 Skool introduced the themes of social critique and youthful defiance that would define BTS's early identity. The album peaked at number five on the Gaon Album Chart in South Korea and has accumulated over 446,000 copies sold domestically. A three-disc edition was later released in Japan through Pony Canyon in 2014.

2 Background and production✎
Before BTS's debut, Big Hit Entertainment ran a blog where the members shared mixtapes, diary entries, and video logs with a growing online following. The blog was temporarily closed on May 20, 2013 to prepare for the group's official launch. That same day, the group's website went live with a countdown timer and BTS's logo was revealed publicly for the first time.
On May 27, a 30-second debut trailer was posted featuring a hip hop beat with scratching and typography graphics hinting at the group's lineup, tracklist, and musical direction. Additional teasers, including individual member photos and concept images, were released through early June. Big Hit revealed the tracklist and physical album details — a package including a photobook and postcard — via their official Twitter account.
The album was produced by Pdogg, Bang Si-hyuk (credited as "Hitman" Bang), Slow Rabbit, and Supreme Boi, with significant contributions from the group's rap line — RM, Suga, and J-Hope. During production, Suga and RM reportedly rewrote the lyrics to "No More Dream" more than 20 times. The album's lyrics reflect themes of prejudice and misunderstanding directed at young people, criticism of a society that diminishes their aspirations, and the anxiety and determination that come with facing an uncertain future.
3 Music and themes✎
2 Cool 4 Skool draws heavily on old-school hip hop from the 1990s, establishing the aggressive, outspoken sound that distinguished BTS from the pop-oriented idol groups dominating K-pop at the time. The lead single "No More Dream" directly confronts the intense pressure placed on Korean youth by their parents and the education system, challenging listeners to pursue their own paths. "We Are Bulletproof Pt.2," the follow-up single, served as a declaration of the group's resilience and ambition in the face of skepticism about their prospects.
Other tracks on the album include the intro "2 Cool 4 Skool" (featuring DJ Friz), the fan-favorite B-side "좋아요" ("I Like It"), and the hidden track "길" ("Path"), in which the members reflect on the road that brought them to their debut. The album's opening track samples "Touch Steps/Two Beat Turn/Freestyle Routine" by K-tel from the 1978 compilation Let's Disco — a nod to Epik High's "Go" from Map of the Human Soul (2003), which sampled the same source.

6 Commercial performance✎
2 Cool 4 Skool sold 760 copies in its first week and debuted at number 19 on the Gaon Album Chart. It climbed to a peak of number five during the chart period of July 21–27, 2013, coinciding with promotions for "We Are Bulletproof Pt.2." By the end of 2013, the album had sold a total of 24,441 copies and placed at number 65 on Gaon's year-end album chart. Over time, as BTS's popularity grew, the album continued to sell steadily, accumulating over 446,000 copies in South Korea.
In the United States, the album made a belated appearance on the Billboard World Albums chart in April 2020, when fans organized a lighthearted campaign to celebrate BTS's "debut" as a "new boy band" for April Fools' Day, pushing the album to number 12 with 1,000 equivalent units sold that week. By that point, 2 Cool 4 Skool had earned 68,000 units in the US.
The lead single "No More Dream" debuted at number 14 on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart in June 2013. It re-entered the chart in April 2020 at a new peak of number two, and eventually reached number one on the chart dated December 30, 2023 — more than ten years after its original release.
- RM's stage name at the time of this album was "Rap Monster." He changed it to "RM" in November 2017.
