Processing is the refining step of Black Desert, the life skill that stands between raw material and almost everything made from it.
Very little in the game is built directly from what comes out of the ground. Ore becomes ingots, timber becomes planks, grain becomes flour, and it is those refined goods rather than the raw ones that cooking, alchemy and shipbuilding actually consume.
It is also the most portable of the skills. Processing is opened from the inventory rather than at a building, so an adventurer can refine a load of ore standing in the field where they mined it. It needs only room to put the results.
1 The kinds of processing✎
Each kind handles a different class of material, and several need a specific tool carried in the inventory.
| Kind | What it does |
|---|---|
| Heating | Melts material down, turning ore into ingots and breaking crystals and equipment back into components. |
| Grinding | Works material in a mortar to make flour, thread, gemstone powder and refined crystal. |
| Chopping | Cuts timber into planks, and planks into plywood. |
| Drying | Removes moisture from fish, meat and hides. Only works on land and under a clear sky. |
| Filtering | Sifts valuable material out of dense packs, such as feathers and alluvial gold. Needs wind. |
| Shaking | Mixes two materials together, producing dough, fertilizer and improved gems and hides. |
| Manufacture | Builds finished goods, including mastery equipment, accessories and furnishings. |
Alongside those sit several conveniences. Simple cooking and simple alchemy combine a few ingredients without needing a workshop, imperial packaging prepares dishes and elixirs for delivery, and repair restores equipment durability at a residence anvil instead of at an NPC.
2 Weather✎
Two kinds depend on conditions outside the adventurer's control. Drying works only on land and only when the sky is clear, and filtering needs wind, so both stop when the weather turns against them.
That makes processing the one life skill where an adventurer occasionally has to wait for the world rather than for a timer.
3 Level and mastery✎
Rising level increases how much a batch returns and how often it succeeds. It also skips steps: a skilled processor heating iron ore may get ingots straight away rather than the intermediate shards a beginner would have to process a second time.
Mastery opens mass processing, which is the change that matters. With a processing stone equipped an adventurer runs many batches at once instead of one, and the better stones are themselves made through manufacture from rare material.
