Star Wars: The Mandalorian, titled on-screen simply as The Mandalorian,[2] is an American live-action space Western television series developed by Lucasfilm for the streaming service Disney+.[3] Part of the Star Wars franchise, it was created by Jon Favreau, is the first live-action series in the franchise, and premiered on November 12, 2019.[4] Set about five years after the fall of the Galactic Empire, the series follows Din Djarin, a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter, and his growing bond with a Force-sensitive foundling later named Grogu.[4][3] The show launched an interconnected slate of New Republic-era stories spanning several Disney+ series.[5]

1 Premise✎

Set in the years following the fall of the Galactic Empire, The Mandalorian follows a solitary bounty hunter operating in the lawless Outer Rim of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. Hired to retrieve a mysterious asset, he instead chooses to protect the Force-sensitive child in his charge, setting the two on a journey across the galaxy while pursued by remnants of the Empire led by Moff Gideon.[3]

The series is noted for its emphasis on parenthood and found family, exploring themes of sacrifice and duty through the relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu.

Notable guest appearances include Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett, and Mark Hamill as a digitally de-aged Luke Skywalker.[6]

4 Production✎

The Mandalorian was a pioneer of StageCraft (informally, "the Volume"), a virtual-production technology developed by Industrial Light & Magic in partnership with Epic Games. The system surrounds a 75-foot performance space with a 20-foot-high, 270-degree LED video wall and ceiling that display real-time, perspective-correct digital environments, allowing actors to perform inside a rendered location rather than in front of a green screen; more than half of the first season was filmed this way, eliminating traditional location shoots.[7] ILM subsequently developed StageCraft into a virtual-production service offered to other film and television productions.[8]

The score was composed by Ludwig Göransson, whose work on the series won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series in both 2020 and 2021.[9]

5 Reception✎

The series was met with widespread critical acclaim, particularly for its visual effects, action sequences, musical score, and the popularity of Grogu. Rotten Tomatoes' critics consensus for the first season, at a 93% score, called it "action-packed and expertly-crafted" and "a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe."[10] In the week of December 14–20, 2020, its second season became the first program on a platform other than Netflix to top Nielsen's weekly streaming rankings, with 1.34 billion minutes viewed;[11] across 2020 as a whole the series accumulated an estimated 14.5 billion minutes viewed, per Nielsen's year-end data.[12]

According to the Television Academy, The Mandalorian has earned 48 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and 15 wins, including awards for visual effects, sound, cinematography, music composition, stunts, and production design.[9]

6 The Mandalorian and Grogu✎

A theatrical feature film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu. Directed by Jon Favreau and released on May 22, 2026, it follows the pair as the New Republic enlists them to help combat scattered Imperial warlords.[13]

The Mandalorian anchors a group of interconnected New Republic-era productions, including:

Filmmaker Dave Filoni is developing a feature film that will focus on the New Republic and "close out the interconnected stories" told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series.[5]
