Ugnaughts are a species of small humanoids in the Star Wars galaxy, known for their pink skin, white hair, upturned noses and thick layers of jowls.[note 1][1] They are best known as the working class of Cloud City above the gas giant Bespin. Members of the species have also found employment across the galaxy, from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant to Lothal.[1] The species first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and the vapor farmer Kuiil became its most prominent individual decades later in The Mandalorian.[1][2]
Ugnaughts are diminutive humanoids, standing noticeably shorter than the humans they usually work alongside.[1] Their pink skin, white hair, upturned snouts and heavy jowls set them apart from the other species crowding an industrial work site.[1]
Ugnaughts appear to be long-lived: Kuiil earned his freedom with the skill of his hands over a stretch of labor that amounted to three human lifetimes.[2]
The species divides itself into a tribal hierarchy, and Ugnaughts carry a galaxy-wide reputation for skilled manual work.[1] They turn up wherever heavy industry needs hands, which has scattered them across a great many worlds.[1]
Not every Ugnaught works a factory floor: Korin Pers, a sava at the University of Bar'leth, built a scholarly career studying antiquities instead.[1]
Ugnaughts make up the working class of Cloud City, the floating colony that mines Tibanna gas from the atmosphere of Bespin.[3] Baron-Administrator Lando Calrissian contended with labor difficulties throughout his brief term running the colony.[4]
The species is most visible in The Empire Strikes Back, where an Ugnaught crew operates the carbon-freezing chamber that Han Solo is lowered into.[5]
Ugnaught labor is not confined to Bespin. Members of the species have worked at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, on Lothal and on the mining world of Gorse, appearing in both The Clone Wars and Rebels.[1]
The Galactic Empire also put Ugnaughts to work as forced labor, and Kuiil spent much of his life in that servitude before buying his way out of it.[2][6]
The best-known Ugnaught in The Mandalorian is Kuiil, a vapor farmer living alone on Arvala-7.[7] He guides the bounty hunter Din Djarin across his valley, teaches him to ride a blurrg and rebuilds the wrecked assassin droid IG-11 into a protector.[8] The rebuild depended less on his gifts with tools than on two habits: patience and affirmation.[8]
Kuiil was voiced by Nick Nolte and performed on set by Misty Rosas, working with animatronics built by Legacy Effects.[6]
