Kuiil is an Ugnaught vapor farmer in the Star Wars television series The Mandalorian, living alone on the remote planet Arvala-7, where he raises blurrgs and repairs machinery.[1] Voiced by Nick Nolte, he becomes an early ally of the bounty hunter Din Djarin during the first season, and he ends most of his statements with the phrase "I have spoken."[2][3]
1 Background✎
Kuiil spent much of his life in servitude to the Galactic Empire, which forced him into labor. According to executive producer Dave Filoni, he endured a lifetime of indentured servitude in order to win back his freedom.[2] Filoni described the character's outlook as a product of that history, saying his "wisdom and humbleness was born of that life experience."[2]
Once free, Kuiil settled on Arvala-7, an out-of-the-way world where he hoped to live in peace, but by the time of the series criminals and mercenaries have begun trespassing on that territory. StarWars.com's Databank notes that he "has worked a lifetime to be free of servitude, and offers valuable skills for those willing to meet his price."[1]
2 Role in The Mandalorian✎
2.1 Meeting the Mandalorian✎
Din Djarin arrives on Arvala-7 hunting a bounty and meets Kuiil, who offers to guide him across the valley. Kuiil settles the matter in his usual way: "I will help you. I have spoken."[3][4]
Kuiil also teaches Din Djarin to ride a blurrg, one of the large reptilian mounts he keeps on the farm. When the Mandalorian struggles, Kuiil pushes him to keep trying, telling him that his ancestors rode the great mythosaur.[5][4]
2.2 Rebuilding IG-11✎
Kuiil finds the wrecked assassin droid IG-11 and sees a new purpose for it, so he rebuilds the machine from scratch.[6] The droid has to relearn everything, and Kuiil teaches it to feed the blurrgs, serve tea and help around the homestead.[6]
StarWars.com credits the result to two habits in particular: patience and affirmation. Kuiil never loses his temper, raises his voice or shows frustration while the droid works through basic tasks, and he offers sincere praise as it improves.[6] He allows mistakes and corrects them gently instead of imposing a schedule,[6] and the droid he rebuilt eventually becomes a protector rather than a killer.[5]
2.3 Death✎
Kuiil leaves his farm to help Din Djarin protect the Force-sensitive child later named Grogu. He is killed by Imperial scout troopers while carrying the child back to the ship, and the troopers take the child.[7] He does not live to see the droid he rebuilt keep that child out of Imperial hands.[5]
StarWars.com described the character's final act in plain terms, writing that "the wise Ugnaught risked everything so that Grogu might live, proving to be as honorable and brave as any Star Wars hero."[2]
3 Characterization✎
Kuiil is written as a patient problem solver in a harsh world, and he shows no interest in fame or fortune.[5] The Databank singles out his mastery of patience and equanimity, which is clearest in the way he handles IG-11.[1] StarWars.com summarized his guiding attitude as the belief that "compassion and empathy make all the difference."[6]
His closing phrase, "I have spoken," became one of the most quoted lines of the first season. StarWars.com noted that once Kuiil has made up his mind, he will not entertain objections — not even from a Mandalorian trying to talk him out of it.[3]
4 Behind the scenes✎
Nick Nolte voiced Kuiil with what StarWars.com called "an endearingly warm-hearted gruffness," while the performance artist Misty Rosas played the character on set.[2] Her work was coordinated with the voice recording and with animatronics built by Legacy Effects, so that the three elements produced a single performance.[2]
Ugnaughts are a species of small humanoids with pink skin, white hair, upturned noses and heavy jowls. They have found work across the galaxy, from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant to Cloud City and Lothal.[8]
