Iruka Umino (うみのイルカ, Umino Iruka) is an instructor at the Ninja Academy of the Village Hidden in the Leaves in Naruto, and the first adult in the series to see Naruto Uzumaki as a boy rather than as the Nine-Tails sealed inside him. A strict, scar-nosed teacher with a soft spot he works hard to hide, Iruka anchors the emotional core of chapter 1: it is his forehead protector that Naruto wears for the rest of the series.[1]

1 In chapter 1

Iruka spends the chapter's opening pages as Naruto's exasperated straight man — dragging him off the defaced Hokage Monument, lecturing a class that has to re-take the transformation test because of him, and getting caught full in the face by the Sexy Technique. But when the graduation exam comes, Iruka is honest where it would be easier to be kind: Naruto's clone is useless, and he fails him, even as Mizuki performs gentleness to win the boy's trust.[1]

That evening Iruka treats Naruto to ramen at Ichiraku and listens to his reasons for wanting the Hokage's name — the scene in which the series first shows that someone is actually listening to Naruto at all. When Mizuki's trap sends Naruto into the forest with the stolen Scroll of Sealing, it is Iruka who finds him first, Iruka who takes a giant shuriken in the back shielding him, and Iruka who says out loud what no adult in the village ever has: that Naruto is not the demon fox, but a proud member of the Hidden Leaf — Naruto Uzumaki.[1] After Naruto's shadow clones flatten Mizuki, Iruka gives him his own forehead protector and pronounces him a graduate.

2 An orphan of the fox attack

Chapter 1 also quietly explains why this particular teacher is the one who reaches Naruto. Iruka's parents were killed in the Nine-Tails' attack on the village twelve years earlier — the same attack that ended with the fox sealed inside the newborn Naruto. The Third Hokage points out the resulting knot: Iruka, orphaned by the fox, has every reason to resent its host, and instead recognizes in Naruto the same loneliness he grew up with himself.[1] His strictness is not coldness; it is the care of a man who knows exactly what it costs a child to be alone.

3 Naruto's first bond

Iruka is not a great warrior, and the series never pretends otherwise — his importance is of a different kind. He is the first person to acknowledge Naruto, which in this story is the most powerful thing anyone can do, and he remains the closest thing Naruto has to family. Without spoiling what lies ahead: as Naruto's world widens far beyond the Academy, it is Iruka he keeps coming back to at the moments that matter most, and the forehead protector handed over at the end of chapter 1 never loses its meaning.
