Iruka Umino (うみのイルカ, Umino Iruka) is an instructor at the Ninja Academy of the Village Hidden in the Leaves in Naruto and the first person to accept Naruto Uzumaki as he is. A chūnin — a mid-ranked ninja — with a scar across his nose and a strict classroom manner, he is a minor figure in the series' battles and a major one in its heart. The forehead protector he ties onto Naruto at the end of chapter 1 stays on the hero for the rest of the series. The story returns to their bond at every one of its turning points.
Chapter 1
Iruka enters the story as the tired adult responsible for everything Naruto does: he hauls him off the defaced Hokage Monument, punishes the class for him, and takes the Sexy Technique straight in the face. When the graduation exam comes he fails Naruto honestly rather than kindly, which opens the door for his colleague Mizuki to win the boy's trust with flattery and a trap. What sets Iruka apart is explained the same night. His own parents died in the Nine-Tails attack twelve years earlier, so he grew up an orphan in the same village, performing for attention nobody wanted to give. He has every reason to hate the boy who carries the fox, and instead he recognizes himself in him.
That evening he buys Naruto ramen at Ichiraku, asks why he wants the Hokage's title, and listens. It is the first time in the series that anyone listens to Naruto at all. Hours later, in the forest, he takes a giant shuriken in the back to shield the boy from Mizuki. Then he says out loud what no adult ever has: Naruto is not the demon fox but a proud ninja of the Hidden Leaf. When Naruto's shadow clones finish Mizuki off, Iruka ties his own forehead protector onto his student and declares him a graduate.
Across the series
The Academy stays Iruka's post while his student's story grows far beyond it, and the manga brings him back at the moments that define Naruto rather than at the battles. He protests when Team 7 is entered into the Chunin Exams only months after graduation, arguing the three are not ready, and is overruled. When the Akatsuki leader Pain attacks the village hunting Naruto, Iruka is among the first ninja he confronts, and he refuses to give his student up. In the Fourth Great Ninja War he is assigned to keep Naruto safely away from the fighting, fails, and sends him off to the front with a teacher's blessing instead.
Role in the story
Iruka is the answer the series gives to its own hardest question: what saves a child nobody wants? Not power, and not an institution, but one adult who accepts him first and worries about the rest later. The manga's later rescues — Gaara, Neji, even the enemies Naruto talks down — replay the pattern Iruka set in chapter 1. He is also the measuring stick for the story's first villain. Mizuki holds the same classroom, wears the same uniform and enjoys the same access to a lonely boy, and chooses to exploit him instead. The series keeps Iruka at the Academy and never needs to make him more than a teacher. His importance is complete by the end of the first chapter, and everything afterward is the story honoring it.
