The Mountain of Eternal Winter is the snowbound region south of Drieghan in Black Desert, where the weather never changes and the cold itself is the first thing an adventurer has to manage.
The mountain was not always like this. It was once the Golden Mountain, and it froze when the ruler who held it became consumed by the pursuit of power, which is where the legends of Labreska, the golden dragon, begin.
It is also the only region added after launch that a character can start in. A new adventurer can begin at level one on the mountain rather than on the coast of Balenos, and see the game's world from this end of it instead.
The region rises south of Drieghan, continuing the high country of that region into permanent winter. Snow covers everything, the tree cover is thin and dead, and the ground alternates between open snowfield, frozen forest and worked-out mine.
Nothing here is temperate: the climate is the region's defining feature rather than a decoration on it, and it governs how an adventurer moves, what they carry and how long they can stay out.
Cold is a mechanic rather than scenery, and an adventurer who stays exposed long enough takes frostbite, a debuff that drains health steadily until they warm up again.
Two regional drinks answer it: citron tea and well-brewed mesima tea both hold the cold off, and an adventurer carrying either can cross the region without much concern. Anyone who sets out without them will be forced back to shelter before long.
The design mirrors what the Great Valencian Desert does with heat and hypothermia. In both places the environment is an opponent that ordinary combat gear does nothing about.
The region's story explains its own weather. The mountain was the Golden Mountain until its ruler grew obsessed with power, and the winter that followed is a consequence of that obsession rather than a natural condition.
Labreska, the golden dragon, belongs to this ground, and the legends told about her elsewhere in the world start from it. Her name is attached to the best thing the region gives out.
Four grounds sit on the mountain, and Murrowak's Labyrinth is a flooded iron mine, the Jade Starlight Forest stands frozen above it, and the Winter Tree Fossils and Erethea's Limbo complete the set.
All four drop the Flame of Frost, the material used to make Labreska's Helmet. That helmet is the region's rarest reward and the reason most adventurers keep returning to the cold.
The region reached Korean servers in December 2021 and the rest of the world in April 2022. Consoles received it in August 2024, more than two years behind the PC version.
