visionOS 1 is the first release of visionOS, shipped February 2, 2024, on the Apple Vision Pro — the operating system of Apple's "spatial computing" platform, and the company's first all-new OS since watchOS. Built on the shared Darwin foundation with iPadOS-derived frameworks, it renders apps as windows, volumes, and full spaces floating in the user's room, driven entirely by eyes and hands: look at a control, tap fingers together — no controllers.
Optic ID authenticated by iris, EyeSight showed the wearer's eyes outward, Personas (in beta) stood in on FaceTime, and immersive Environments replaced the room with Yosemite or the Moon via the Digital Crown.
Features
The windows/volumes/spaces model; eye-and-hand input; Environments; Personas (beta); Optic ID; Mac Virtual Display; iPad app compatibility; immersive video formats; and the disc-of-app-icons Home View.
Legacy
visionOS 1 established spatial computing's interaction grammar — gaze-plus-pinch proved the headset's mouse-click, imitated industry-wide — and its shipping polish, on a first-generation platform, was the launch's consensus surprise. Its constraints (Persona uncanniness, app scarcity) set the successors' agenda.
