macOS Sonoma (version 14) is the twentieth release of [[macOS]], shipped on September 26, 2023. Widgets escaped Notification Center onto the desktop itself — interactive, tinting to stay unobtrusive, and, via Continuity, streaming from a nearby iPhone without Mac installs. Video calls gained the presenter overlay (speaker floating over shared screens) and reaction gestures; screensavers became slow-motion aerials that settle into wallpapers; and a dedicated Game Mode prioritized CPU/GPU for play — accompanying Apple's Game Porting Toolkit courtship of Windows game developers.
= Features =
Desktop widgets (with iPhone widget streaming); presenter overlay and reactions; aerial screensavers; Game Mode; Safari profiles and web apps in the Dock; enhanced autocorrect; PDF form autofill; and a password-sharing group feature.
= Legacy =
Desktop widgets completed a circle begun by Dashboard two decades earlier, and Game Mode plus the porting toolkit marked Apple's most serious Mac-gaming push since the Intel era — groundwork the Apple-silicon GPU generations kept building on.
