The iMac is the computer that saved [[Apple]]: the translucent Bondi Blue G3 of 1998, [[Steve Jobs]]'s first product after his return, which made the internet-ready all-in-one a mass-market object and design a reason to buy a computer again. Every era since has kept the same promise — the whole computer inside the screen.

= History =

The G4's lamp-arm design (2002) remains a museum piece; the white and then aluminum Intel iMacs made it the family-desktop default; the 5K Retina display (2014) put a reference monitor in a consumer machine. The [[Apple silicon]] era reset it again: the 2021 [[Apple M1|M1]] iMac shrank to a 11.5-mm-thin 24-inch slab in seven colors — the classic iMac spirit revived — refreshed through the [[Apple M3|M3]] (2023) and the current [[Apple M4|M4]] (2024). The 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro retired without successors, their audience handed to the [[Mac Studio]] and [[Apple Display|Studio Display]] pair.

= Position =

The iMac is Apple's most sentimental product line — the shape on the "think different" era's posters — and its modern role is exact: the beautiful family and front-desk computer, one cable, no tower. Its color-matched keyboards and the seven-hue lineup carry 1998's argument into the [[Apple silicon]] age: computers can be likable.
