It evolves from Pokémon/Charmeleon starting at level 36 and is the final form of Pokémon/Charmander, one of the three Kanto first partner Pokémon. Charizard is the mascot of Pokémon Red and its remake, Pokémon FireRed, appearing on the box of both games. It is one of the most popular Pokémon ever made. In 2020, fans voted it the most popular Generation I Pokémon in The Pokémon Company's official Pokémon of the Year poll. Charizard has three special forms. It can Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X or Mega Charizard Y, and it can Gigantamax into a giant form with wings made of fire. = Biology = Charizard looks like a classic dragon. It walks on two legs and is mostly orange, with a cream-colored belly and large wings that are blue-green underneath. Two horns stick out from the back of its head, and a flame burns at the tip of its long tail. The flame burns hotter as Charizard grows stronger, and it can turn blue when Charizard is very angry. If the tail flame ever goes out, Charizard is in serious danger. Charizard flies through the sky looking for strong opponents to battle. Its wings can carry it up to about 4,600 feet (1,400 meters) high. Its fire breath is hot enough to melt boulders and even giant glaciers, and it can accidentally start forest fires. Even so, Charizard has a strong sense of honor: it never uses its flames on an opponent weaker than itself. In the wild, Charizard lives in mountains and valleys, and sometimes in volcanoes, where it forms groups with Charmander and Charmeleon. A famous home for wild Charizard in the Johto region is the Charicific Valley. = Forms = == Mega Charizard X == Mega Charizard X is a Fire- and Dragon-type form. The huge power of Mega Evolution turns its body black and its flames blue. Blue fire leaks from the sides of its mouth, and its tail flame always burns blue. This is the only form where Charizard becomes a true Dragon-type. == Mega Charizard Y == Mega Charizard Y keeps Charizard's orange color but looks sleeker, with three horns on its head and larger wings. It is an amazing flier, said to be faster and more agile than a jet fighter. Its power is said to come from the bond it shares with its Trainer. == Gigantamax Charizard == Gigantamax Charizard towers over 91 feet (28 meters) tall. Its wings turn into pure fire, and the flame inside its body burns hotter than 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit (2,000 degrees Celsius). The temperature climbs even higher when it roars. Its special G-Max Move, G-Max Wildfire, sends giant flaming wings shaped like a bird circling around its opponents. = Evolution = {| style="width: 100%; max-width: 600px; margin: 0 auto; border: 2px solid #EE8130; text-align: center; background: #fff;" |- | style="width: 28%;" | !100px
Pokémon/Charmander | style="width: 8%;" | →
Level 16 | style="width: 28%;" | !100px
Pokémon/Charmeleon | style="width: 8%;" | →
Level 36 | style="width: 28%;" | !100px
Charizard |} = In the games = Charizard is usually obtained by choosing Charmander as a first partner Pokémon and raising it. It appears in nearly every main Pokémon game, either by evolution, trading, or special events. Many famous Trainers use a Charizard. Red, the hero of the first games, battles with one in later titles as a nod to Charizard being the Pokémon Red mascot. Leon, the Champion of the Galar region, is famous for his Gigantamax Charizard. Other notable users include Blue, Lance, and Blaine. In the Alola region, people even ride Charizard through the sky as a delivery and travel service called Charizard Glide. Pokédex entries across the games describe the same key facts: its fire melts almost anything, its flame grows hotter with battle experience, its tail flame turns blue-white when it is furious, and it flies in search of strong opponents but never burns a weaker foe. == Base stats == {| style="width: 100%; max-width: 600px; border: 2px solid #EE8130; text-align: center; background: #fff;" |- ! style="background: #EE8130; color: #fff;" | Form ! style="background: #EE8130; color: #fff;" | HP ! style="background: #EE8130; color: #fff;" | Attack ! style="background: #EE8130; color: #fff;" | Defense ! style="background: #EE8130; color: #fff;" | Sp. Ash Ketchum caught a Charmander early in his journey, and it eventually evolved into Ash's Charizard. For a long time it refused to obey Ash, which became one of the show's most famous storylines, until it finally accepted him as its Trainer and became one of his strongest partners. Other well-known Charizard in animation include Alain's Mega Charizard X, Kiawe's Ride Charizard, Leon's Gigantamax Charizard, and Friede's Charizard in Pokémon Horizons: The Series. In the animated special Pokémon Origins, Red's Charizard Mega Evolved into Mega Charizard X, the first Mega Evolution ever shown in animation. = In other media = Charizard is a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series, both as part of the Pokémon Trainer's team and on its own. It is also a fighter in Pokkén Tournament and a playable all-rounder in Pokémon UNITE. In the live-action movie Detective Pikachu, a Charizard battles in an underground arena. In the Pokémon Trading Card Game, the original Base Set Charizard card became one of the most famous trading cards in the world. At the height of Pokémon's popularity it was considered the best card in the game, and rare first edition copies have sold for very high prices. Charizard also appeared in the music video for Ed Sheeran's song "Celestial," flying the singer back home. = Name origin = Charizard combines char (to burn) and lizard. Its Japanese name, Lizardon, likely combines lizard with dragon or the suffix -don, which is common in dinosaur names and comes from the ancient Greek word for "tooth." = Trivia = * Charizard was designed by Atsuko Nishida, who also says it is her favorite Pokémon. * Even though it looks like a dragon, regular Charizard is not a Dragon-type. Only Mega Charizard X gains the Dragon type. * Before Generation VI, Charizard and Rhyhorn shared the exact same cry in the games. * Charizard is the Pokémon used most often by Champions in the main games. * A real species of bee, Chilicola charizard, was named after Charizard because of its mountain habitat and orange coloring. = Other wikis = * Charizard (Pokémon) - Bulbapedia * Charizard - Wikipedia
