Mac OS X Jaguar (version 10.2) is the third release of [[macOS]], shipped on August 24, 2002 — the first Apple marketed by its big-cat codename, on the box and in the keynote. It completed the platform's rescue: Quartz Extreme moved window compositing to the GPU for the fluidity Aqua had promised, and the release added the app-ecosystem staples — Address Book, iChat instant messaging, a junk-mail-filtering Mail, and Sherlock 3.

The startup Happy Mac icon, greeting Mac users since 1984, retired in favor of the Apple logo — Jaguar as the moment OS X stopped apologizing to the past.

Quartz Extreme GPU compositing; iChat (AIM-compatible); Address Book with system-wide contacts; Rendezvous (later Bonjour) zero-config networking; Universal Access; CUPS printing; journaled HFS+ (10.2.2); and Windows-network browsing.

= Legacy =

Jaguar was the first Mac OS X reviewers recommended without asterisks, and its cat-name marketing set a branding pattern that ran for a decade. Rendezvous/Bonjour became Apple's quiet networking backbone — AirPlay, AirDrop, and HomeKit all trace to it.
