'''Succession''' is the alternative to [[Black Desert/Awakening|awakening]] in ''[[Black Desert]]'', and it is the choice to keep fighting with the weapon a character has carried since level one.
Where an awakening hands over a second weapon and a separate skill set, succession takes the skills already learned and rebuilds them. The moves are the ones a player knows, with more damage behind them and, in many cases, different behavior attached.
It was added years after awakenings, which is why it reads as the second option even though it is the older way of fighting. For a good many classes it is now the stronger one.
= How it is unlocked =
The succession quests come from the Black Spirit at level 56, alongside the awakening line rather than in place of it. In practice most characters finish the awakening quests first and the succession quests afterward, though the order varies between classes.
Completing the line does not force a choice. Both sets of skills exist on the character once both quest lines are done, and which one is active is a matter of which skills are learned.
= What it changes =
Succession is not simply a damage increase on the old kit. Individual skills are reworked, some gaining effects they never had before level 56, so a successor plays a recognizable version of the early game rather than an identical one.
The practical difference from an awakening is range and rhythm. Awakened forms often trade the original weapon's reach or speed for something else entirely, while succession keeps whatever made the class feel the way it did and pushes it further.
= Choosing =
Neither path is correct in general. Some classes are widely considered better awakened, others better in succession, and a few are close enough that it comes down to preference.
The choice is also not permanent. Skills are stored as presets, so a character can hold both builds and load whichever suits the situation, needing a Secret Book of Old Moon or a skill instructor to make the change.
That reversibility matters more than it sounds. An adventurer who dislikes their awakening is not stuck with it, and the two builds together are part of why a roster of thirty-two classes supports roughly twice as many ways to play.
