Fishing is the most accessible life skill in Black Desert, requiring only a rod and water deep enough to hold a line, and every character begins the game already carrying one.
It is also the skill most often practiced without the player watching. An adventurer who casts and then walks away still catches fish, which has made fishing the standard way to leave a character earning something overnight.
The catch is worth more than it appears. Fish feed cooking, they can be dried and packed for trading, and the rarer grades are valuable enough that a well-placed fisher earns steadily for very little attention.
How it works
An adventurer equips a rod, faces water and casts. A bite follows after a wait, and what happens next depends on whether anyone is paying attention.
Pressing the key again on the bite starts the active version, a gauge that has to be stopped in the right place across three attempts and then a short sequence of directional inputs. Harder sequences mean rarer fish, so the minigame is the price of the better catch.
Doing nothing starts the unattended version instead. The rod finishes the catch on its own after a fixed delay, without the minigame and without the player, which is slower per fish but costs no attention at all.
Energy can be spent on the cast to improve what comes up, and the rod itself matters as much as the water: better rods reach rarer fish and survive longer before they need repair. Rods are crafted, given as quest rewards or bought on the market, and every rod wears out with use.
Grades and levels
Fish come in grades marked by color, running green, blue and then yellow, and the odds of the better ones improve as fishing level rises.
Level also buys a filter. A sufficiently skilled fisher can have the low grades discarded automatically as they are caught, with green dropped from the professional tier, blue from artisan and yellow from master. That matters more than it sounds, because an unattended session fills its inventory with whatever it catches, and a fisher who cannot discard fills up on the cheapest fish in the water.
Selling and drying
Fish do not hold their value indefinitely. Each carries a guarantee period, and once that expires the price falls away, so a catch left in storage is worth progressively less than one sold promptly.
Drying is the way around it. Fish put through processing become dried fish, which keep indefinitely and can be packed into boxes, which turns a perishable catch into stock that can wait for a good price.
