Dungeons are a late addition to Black Desert and remain a small part of it. The game was built around open-world hunting grounds, where anyone can wander in and fight alongside strangers, and enclosed instanced content had to be fitted around that afterwards.
What exists is deliberately unlike the rest of the game. A dungeon is entered by a fixed party, runs on mechanics rather than on gear, and pays once a week instead of by the hour.
Atoraxxion
Atoraxxion is the game's dungeon proper, divided into four parts that share a setting and a story. Vahmalkea is the desert one and Sycrakea the ocean, with Yolunakea and Orzekea completing the set, and each is subdivided into named chambers rather than being one long corridor.
Five adventurers are the intended party. The content was designed around co-operation from the start, and the quest rewards are only available in the five-person mode. Solo versions of the first two have since been added for people who want to see them alone.
The mechanics are the point. Progress depends on doing particular things in a particular order and telling four other people about it, which makes these fights unlike the open-world grinding the rest of the game runs on.
What it drops
A dungeon does not shower loot the way a hunting ground does. It drops only the items needed to advance through itself, and the actual payment comes from beating the final boss and finishing the weekly quests attached to the run.
The limit is per family rather than per character. Rewards can be taken twice a week, resetting after midnight on Thursday, and a second run has to be made on a character that has not already accepted the weekly quest.
The Black Shrine
The Land of the Morning Light brought a different arrangement. At the Black Shrine an adventurer fights bosses drawn from Korean folk tales, and chooses the difficulty before going in rather than meeting whatever the world provides.
That makes it the closest thing the game has to a scaling solo dungeon, and it sits alongside Atoraxxion rather than replacing it.
