Drieghan is the mountain country beyond Mediah in the world of Black Desert, and the region the rest of the world knows as the land of dragons.
It is high, cold and poor in everything except stone. Gray spires of rock stand out of the valleys at angles that look deliberate, and the capital, Duvencrune, sits in an alpine basin around water that arrived after a drought lasting forty years.
The people who live here, the Sherekhan, trace themselves to ancestors who bathed in dragon's blood and were changed by it. Pearl Abyss has also described the region as the ancestral home of the dwarves.
Geography
Drieghan lies east of Mediah and north of the ground that runs down toward Valencia, reached by climbing out of the Mediahn highland rather than by any easy road. Altitude governs everything about it.
The country is divided into five parts, and their arrangement on the map traces the outline of a dragon. The Sherekhan Necropolis lies at the head, in the north.
Duvencrune occupies a valley where permanent waterfalls and a lake feed the only substantial farmland in the region. Beyond it the ground is bare rock, thin pasture and ruins, with the Blood Wolf Settlement and the Tshira Ruins holding the harder country.
History
The Sherekhan began as a people transformed. Those who bathed in dragon's blood found their skin hardened and their bodies altered, and their descendants carried the change. Their first settlement stood east of the present region under a ruler named Akum.
A drought killed most of them inside a year. Akum, dying, told those left to bury a dragon's tooth and to settle wherever blessed rain fell on it. That instruction turned the Sherekhan into wanderers for four decades.
Rain came at last, and where it fell it did not stop. The water cut waterfalls and filled a lake that has never dried, and the Sherekhan settled there and called the place Duvencrune. The people had once been as large as giants, and each generation since has been smaller and weaker than the one before it.
The five territories were organized in the shape of a dragon soon afterward, with the burial ground at the head. The Sherekhan return to the necropolis three times a year, less to bury their dead than to remind themselves what they used to be.
Isolation ended twice. Ahib refugees fleeing the fighting inside Kamasylvia crossed the border and exposed how little the region could defend itself. Dragons were sighted again some years later, and Chief Durgeff broke with every precedent by hiring foreign hunters and mercenaries to deal with them.
Garmoth
Garmoth, the crimson dragon, is the region's best-known resident and the reason many adventurers come at all. She was added as a world boss in November 2018, and she remains one of the hardest scheduled fights in the game.
Her presence is also the point of the region's story. A country whose whole identity rests on having descended from dragon-touched ancestors now has a living dragon above it, and the people who share its blood are too diminished to answer that themselves.
Hunting grounds
The region's grounds sit in the upper-middle band of the game's difficulty, above Mediah and below the end-game country.
