Bosses in Black Desert are scheduled public events rather than encounters a group books for itself. A boss appears at a fixed time in a fixed place, everyone who turns up fights the same creature, and the rewards are divided by how much each adventurer contributed.
That structure makes them unlike raid bosses elsewhere. There is no lockout and no party to assemble, so a player joins by being in the right place at the right time and hitting the thing hard enough to register.
They matter because of what they drop. The best weapons and off-hands in the game come from these fights, which makes the schedule a fixture of how serious players plan their week.
How they work
Each boss has one health pool shared by every adventurer present, so a crowded fight ends faster rather than dividing the creature between groups.
The schedule is published in the game itself, with separate calendars for the North American and European servers, and an adventurer can ask for a warning five, fifteen or thirty minutes ahead. Vell is given the longest notice because reaching it means a sea voyage.
Bosses do not wait. Most vanish thirty minutes after appearing, and two of the smaller ones after fifteen, so a late arrival can miss the fight entirely.
Dying costs nothing. Experience is not lost and crystals do not break, which is why these fights are one of the few places an underequipped character can safely take part.
Rewards
Loot is earned rather than rolled for. Rewards are banded by share of the damage done, with the largest contributors taking the best of it, and a floor of one hundredth of one percent to qualify for anything at all.
That floor is low on purpose. A character far below the gear the fight expects can still land enough hits to be paid, which is what lets newer players attend the same bosses as everyone else.

The Land of the Morning Light runs its own set alongside these, drawn from Korean folk tales and paying on a weekly cycle rather than per appearance.
Harder versions
Some bosses have a stronger variant that appears in place of the ordinary one and pays better for it. A nightmarish Kzarka and a bloodstorm Nouver are the examples most players will meet.
