The United States is where Apple retail was invented — over the skepticism of everyone who watched Gateway's stores die. The first two Apple Stores opened the same May 2001 day on opposite coasts, [[Steve Jobs]] giving press tours of wooden tables and a "Genius Bar" the industry mocked and then copied wholesale.

= The fleet =

Roughly 270 stores anchor American malls and main streets, topped by architectural statements: the glass cube on Fifth Avenue (2006, open 24/7 in its heyday), Michigan Avenue's carbon-fiber roof on the Chicago River, and the Apple Park Visitor Center overlooking the ring itself. The U.S. fleet is Apple retail's laboratory — Today at Apple sessions, pickup logistics, and the store-as-town-square concept all premiered here, as did its labor chapter: the first unionized Apple Store (Towson, Maryland, 2022).
