Apple Intelligence is Apple's personal-AI system — generative models woven into the operating systems rather than shipped as a chatbot. Its architecture is the pitch: requests run on-device wherever the hardware allows, and overflow to Private Cloud Compute, Apple-silicon servers engineered so that even Apple cannot read the data they process.
Rollout
Announced at WWDC 2024 and launched that October with iOS 18.1, the system arrived in waves: Writing Tools, notification summaries, and Clean Up first; Genmoji, Image Playground, and optional ChatGPT integration by December; EU devices and more languages through 2025. The iPhone 16 generation was built around it, and its hardware floor — A17 Pro and M1 or newer — quietly became the line every current Apple device must clear.
The stumble was Siri: the personalized, screen-aware assistant shown in 2024 was delayed in March 2025, becoming Apple's most public AI setback and reportedly gating a generation of home products. WWDC25 answered with substance elsewhere — Live Translation across calls and messages, Visual Intelligence, workout coaching, and the Foundation Models framework opening free on-device inference to every app.
Position
Apple Intelligence is Apple's wager that privacy and integration beat raw model size: features embedded where users already are, personal context kept on the phone, and the heavy lifting done by Apple silicon on both ends. Its credibility now rides on shipping the new Siri — the feature the whole system was named for.
