The Apple Beta Software Program is the public's invitation into Apple's summer: free preview builds of [[iOS]], [[macOS]], and the rest, months before September. What began as a cautious Yosemite experiment in 2014 became an annual ritual — the July public beta as the moment each year's redesigns ([[Liquid Glass]] most recently) meet their real critics.

= Position =

The program converts curiosity into QA at scale: millions of volunteer testers, Feedback Assistant reports on hardware Apple's labs can't replicate, and expectation-setting for reviewers before launch. Since developer betas went free in 2023 the tiers mostly measure risk appetite — and Apple's habit of tuning contested features between beta builds has made "the betas" a news cycle of their own.
